Tony Meola is a retired American soccer player who is considered one of the greatest goalkeepers in U.S. soccer history. He was born on February 21, 1969 in Belleville, New Jersey.
Meola began his professional career in 1988 with the New York Centaurs of the American Soccer League before moving on to several other clubs in the United States, including the Long Island Rough Riders and the Kansas City Wizards (now Sporting Kansas City) in Major League Soccer.
Meola is best known for his performances with the U.S. national team, with whom he earned 100 caps between 1988 and 2006. He was the starting goalkeeper for the U.S. in the 1990, 1994, and 2002 FIFA World Cups, and played a key role in the team's success during those tournaments.
Throughout his career, Meola was known for his shot-stopping ability, athleticism, and commanding presence in the goal. He was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2012 in recognition of his contributions to the sport.
